AB    NOVELTY - The apparatus (1) has a conveying device (4) insertable partially through a wound opening for conveying a surgical device i.e. wound retractor device (2), through a wound opening. A separate holder element (5) holds the surgical device in a low-profile configuration, and is formed separately from the conveying device. The holder element is disassembled from the conveying device after conveying of the surgical device through the opening, where the holder element comprises a circumferential discontinuity. The holder element engages with an external surface of a tissue.
   USE - Apparatus for inserting a surgical device i.e. wound retractor device, through a wound opening.
   ADVANTAGE - The holder element facilitates insertion of the surgical device, while minimizing trauma to sides of the wound opening with a minimum number of stages required by a user.
   DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for the following:
   (1) a surgical assembly comprising a surgical device
   (2) an opening device to create a wound opening
   (3) a method of inserting a surgical device.
