    Abstract

In April 2015, Orna Donath’sSignsarticle“Regretting Motherhood: ASociopolitical Analysis”provoked a storm of controversy in mainstreamand social media in Germany that continues to resonate. The #regretting-motherhood debate—so called because of tweets using the English-languagehashtag to highlight their contribution—illustrates the intense public interestin motherhood in contemporary Germany. Our article analyzes the debatewithin the German context and uses the controversy to raise broader ques-tions about the impact of maternal myths on women’s experiences and fertil-ity decisions.
