Abstract
John Dean is a well-known and highly esteemed figure in Irish and international library circles. This article is based on discussions the author had with John and from reading his published work. It presents a brief overview of his very interesting career, with the focus on the major contribution John made to the development of libraries and library education in Africa. The article is written in the first person.
