Abstract
When are tropes merely tropes, and when and how can they be understood as "literal"? This chapter examines the rhetoric and writings of the Irish-language Writer, Máirtín Ó Cadhain, for whom cré (clay) was both a rhetorical/artistic trope and an immanent force within human society.
