Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the background of the houses named above with a
view to answering some questions as to why one survived while the other perished.
The work will be set in three parts, the first part will deal with the history of big
houses of Ireland in general and the diverse factors which influenced their history.
The second part will focus on the two houses’ which concern this study and give a
synopsis of their individual history. The third part will seek to take an overview of
the determining factors which led to the positions as pertains today.
