Abstract
This paper considers possible definitions of the concept of development, advocating one which includes aspects of human advancement in addition to the more traditional economic variables. The method of calculation of one multi-dimensional index (the Human Development Index) is described and a short report on the findings is then given. A method of using this index in the classroom is then outlined.
