    Abstract

    This report presents the results of research undertaken by the Department of Adult and Community Education at NUI Maynooth for the Employment and Education Working Group of the Dublin Employment Pact. The aim of the research is to provide an overview of Access Programmes in the Dublin area for school leavers from disadvantaged communities, with the following objectives: · To describe existing provision · To assess its impact on participation and retention in third-level education · To identify gaps in provision · To identify elements of best practice · To make recommendations towards improvements in current policy and practice The report is based on documentary analysis, and primary research including interviews, focus group discussions, questionnaires and attendance at meetings and information sessions with providers. The documents consulted include programme reports and evaluations, policy documents and research reports.
