Abstract
Influenced by contemporary developments in Church and State, the Irish 6migri priest
based in Paris, Thomas Messingham, used hagiography for the purpose, inter alia, of
establishing Ireland’s claim to be not only a nation in her own right but a nation by divine
election - defined precisely by its Catholicism. [Editor]
