Abstract
This study focuses on the academic performance evaluation at the University College Dublin (UCD) in Ireland. Changing the promotion procedures for academic staff at the university was motivated by widespread dissatisfaction with the existing system and the changing cultural context within UCD and wider educational sector. The introduction of the benchmarking system of performance appraisal was intended to remove ambiguity and establish an acceptance level of performance across UCD.
