    Abstract

The article discusses the industrial and enterprise development in Gaeltacht, Ireland. The general policy of Gaeltacht Development Authority was focused on attracting external investment, but it viewed indigenous entrepreneurship as providing sustainable economic development. Main barriers to entrepreneurship include lack of infrastructure and distance from urban areas. The development plan for 2005-2009 concentrates on indigenous enterprise development, natural resources and language-based projects. The language is the main competitive advantage of the area. Its industrialisation leads to a community culture of cynicism regarding the profitability and longevity of industries.
