Abstract
This article presents the initial findings of a major study which is concerned with an examination of the magnitude of the important banking variables for Irish banks in comparison with banks in a number of selected countries. A major objective of the study is to determine the profitability
of Irish banks relative to their international counterparts. Much of the impetus for the project had come from a high level of public comment which suggested that Irish banks were excessively profitable and were exploiting the operations of the cartel governing a large part of retail banking in Ireland. The relevance of the latter part of this argument has already been analysed [Bourke, 1981].
