Abstract
In 1916, Eleanor Knott published an edition of the medieval Irish tale 'Why Mongán was deprived of noble issue'. The edition was accompanied by a short introduction, translation and some brief notes concerning textual difficulties. Since its publication, the tale has received little attention and a thorough examination of the language remains outstanding. This article re-examines the sole surviving witness of the text and offers a revised edition and modernised translation, together with some new interpretations. It also analyses the language of the text which suggests the original dates to the period boradly between c. 850-950.
