Abstract
British post-war defence policy has been dominated by the progressive abandonment of
Empire. Dockrill (1988) notes that this has required the British Army to refine and
develop the military and policing skills associated with colonial disengagement. Since
1945 the British have developed experience, flexibility and skill in handling insurgency.
