Abstract
This article draws on neglected but valuable sources of historical information on the working lives of the laboring classes around the turn of the century, especially those of unorganized (non-unionized) women employed mainly in the North of Ireland in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is important to point out the relevance of the historical experience of already advanced countries for what is occurring in the world of work in developing countries.
