Abstract
This policy review examines land use in
Ireland, with particular emphasis on
agriculture, and draws on concepts that
support a sustainable transition and
fairer futures.1 It therefore requires a
review of policy as constructed, but also
an interrogation of the wider political
economy to observe, however
fragmentary, the current dynamics that
may help or hinder a move towards a just
transition. It takes as its starting premise
that Irish land use policy cannot be
understood separately from long
durational, structural dynamics that
shape the agricultural system. Policy
design
matters,
but
structural
conditions also significantly influence
implementation and outcomes.
