Abstract
Since the first half of the nineteenth century there has been a growing divergence
within universities between the studies of the liberal arts and those of the natural
sciences, technology and engineering. This has arisen because of the rapid
developments in these latter areas and their perceived need for specialisation and
presumed lesser importance of liberal arts subjects. In this context the term liberal is
generally understood to mean freedom to range over a broad range of knowledge,
without being constrained to serve any particular application area, or even purpose.
