Abstract
As the field of Chicana/o Studies approaches its 50th anniversary, this chapter maps the trajectory of Chicana/o cinema. The importance of self-representation is a key notion that informs this analysis, which charts the development of Chicana/o cinema from the era of problematic and even racist Hollywood portrayals of Latina/os, epitomized by the figure of Don Juan, to contemporary Chicana film practice.
