    Abstract

This article discusses the impact of motherhood on female subjectivity, as depicted in Ying Chen’s Un enfant à porte, published first by Boréal in 2008 and then by Seuil in 2009. Although this is not the first time that Ying Chen has examined the theme of motherhood in her writing, what is unique about Un enfant à ma porte is that it gives us direct access to the mother’s voice, as opposed to her story being narrated through another character. This article will look at the issue of maternal ambiguity and the difficulties enountered by the mother in her effort to maintain a sense of self while caring for another.
