Abstract
The logic of recent hyping of the demographic imperative ( i.e. the pensions “time bomb”) in Ireland is questionable as to its logic and its promise to address ageing in a sustainable way. Much of the policy discourse it drives – primarily about shifting resources away from the distribution mechanisms of the state to the market – seems narrow and short-sighted whereas ageing is gradual and needs a graded multi-dimensional and integrated strategic policy response. Devolving welfare to the individual and market pose risks - as revealed by the global financial crisis. The state role in provision is critical to sustaining an ageing population.
