Abstract
Irish young adult (YA) literature during the turn of the millennium was slow to
confront and address systems of heteronormativity and homonormativity or to propose
alternatives for queer belonging and queer futures. Since the legalisation of marriage equality
in Ireland in 2015, there has been a notable increase of Irish YA works embracing young
LGBTQIA+ characters and queer experiences. Informed by José Esteban Muñoz’s reading of
queerness as hopeful and future-oriented, I will examine the evolving representation of
queerness in Irish YA fiction over the last three decades and the radical potentiality of
contemporary Irish YA fiction for queertopian (re)imaginings.
