Abstract
In the oeuvre of António Lobo Antunes, Africa constitutes a constant theme, as is reflected in O Esplendor de
Portugal. This paper concentrates on an analysis of the level and the mode in which the subjectivity of Isilda is
configured both by Africa and, also, by the influence of her father. Away from the portrait of women in the “Lição de
Salazar”, Isilda does not leave behind the Angolan soil. In addition, it is in the character of Isilda where the
postcolonial duality is presented since she was brought up in Baixa do Cassanje and experimented by her, by the father
the colonial Salazarist society and, as well, now on her own, in a postcolonial Angola. Isilda is the character who is
fully aware that would remain in Africa.
