Abstract

This chapter contributes to the growing number of studies that aim to disabuse Schubertian literature of the myths regarding Schubert’s competence in large-scale instrumental forms. Unfortunately, some relatively recent claims by Stephen Hefling (which will be detailed below) in relation to the A minor String Quartet resonate with more dated approaches to Schubert’s output, particularly approaches which readily see deviations from standard norms of form and harmony as compositional failings rather than attempting to understand what inspired those changes.2 This chapter is concerned with Schubert’s approach to sonata form as it appears in the first movement of this string quartet.
